Durham HPC Days 2025: A Week of Cutting-Edge Computing and Community

From 2–6 June 2025, Durham’s Department of Computer Science hosted HPC Days 2025, welcoming over 150 members of the UK and international high-performance computing community.

The week featured a packed programme of talks, panels, and workshops — spanning HPC in climate and weather research, high-energy particle physics, and advances in AI for computational science. Special workshops led by Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) and CoSeC broadened the conversation, highlighting the importance of inclusion and real-world impact in computational research.

Highlights included presentations on the UK’s Exchange Grant and Accelerate Computing initiatives. Among them, the SHAREing project, led by Durham’s Professor Tobias Weinzierl, aims to empower researchers to make smarter, more effective use of advanced computing and AI resources.

Beyond the technical sessions, HPC Days was also about connection and community. From lively coffee-break discussions to a rain-soaked (but undeterred!) hike along Hadrian’s Wall, participants had plenty of chances to share ideas and strengthen collaborations.
